Flowers are some of the most beautiful things nature has to offer, but they do not last forever. However, there is a way you can preserve its stem and turn it into sticks for your DIY projects! When you purchase flowers from the market avoid cutting their stems, the longer they are the easier it will be to get viable sticks.
Fresh flowers normally last a few days in good condition, but when they start to rot it’s time to throw them away. However, this time you won’t be throwing away the entire flower just its petal head.
How To Turn Flower Stems To Sticks
Step 1: Start by removing your flower from the vase, and set them on a towel. Allowing the towel to soak in the water from the edges of your flowers. Check to make sure the stem is not soft or mushy as well.
Step 2: Once your stem has dried start cutting off the flower head, and the bottom of the stems if necessary. Keep in mind you only need the dry bits of your stems as they are the best part to preserve. Once they are cut check the edges again to ensure they are dry and throw away the petal head and bottom bit.
Step 3: Using a small scraper start peeling away the top layer, cutting down any unnecessary leaves or tiny stems making their way out. Creating a smooth layer that brings forward a stick shape. Try to keep as light of a touch as possible, it’s easy to scrape off too much but impossible to get it back. Keep repeating the process until you have successfully scraped all your stems.
Step 4: Using a mild sandpaper smoothen out the stick as much as possible. For best results set the stick on a flat surface, use one hand to hold it in place, and the other to sand it down. Remember to keep a gentle touch, the idea is to get rid of any splinter that might come out at a later time.
Step 5: It’s time to clean your stems and see how you have done. Using a damp cloth carefully clean each stem, once cleaned dry them using a tissue paper or cotton towel. If needed, place the stick in direct sunlight for a few minutes.
Step 6: Your sticks are now ready to be used! You can store them in a box or container, keeping them safe until you use them. Or you can use them as they are by adding a few drops of essential oil to the mix. Creating a natural diffuser for your home. Either way, the sticks are ready and waiting for your next creative journey. So go ahead and create something you can proudly show off in your home.
